Monica “Monie” Mahealani Chong, 52, of Kailua-Kona died Feb. 2 at her residence. Born in Kealakekua, she was the site coordinator for Kealakehe Elementary School A+ Program and member of Jehovah’s Witnesses Kaloko Congregation. Service at 11 a.m. Saturday at OTEC. Casual attire, no flowers. Anthony “Tony” Paul DeMello, 67, of Honalo died Jan. 25 at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Ka‘u, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for E.M. Rivera &Sons and Rivco Construction. James Yoshiaki Nakao, 84, of Honokaa died Jan. 29 at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born in Kapulena, he was a retired welder. Peter Petersen Sr., 83, of Hilo died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Bronx, N.Y. He retired as a U.S. Navy chief petty officer and as a supply officer for the Department of Defense. Survived by sons, Jason (Anna) Petersen of Alaska and Peter Petersen Jr. of Hilo; daughters, Susan (Andy) Encabo of Alaska, Joana Petersen of the Philippines &Cathlene (James) Reinold of Alaska; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Arline Ellen Rood, 82, of Hilo died Feb. 5 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Fresno, Calif., she was a housewife and member of the Waiakea Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mitsue Yamamoto, 92, of Hilo and formerly of Lahaina, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. She was a housekeeper for the Sheraton Maui and a member of Hawaii County Nutritional Center and Lahaina Methodist Church. Private services held.
